Kenyir Lake,

The first time I knew about the Kenyir Lake was when I
was attached with the N.E.B. (National Electricity Board),
now corporatised as Tenaga Nasional Berhad way back in 1977
when the N.E.B implemented the construction of the Kenyir Hydro
Electricity Project. I was a very young engineer then, having
just graduated from University of London King's College two
(2) years before that. Immediately after I got back from
United Kingdom, I was sent to Grik in Perak to assist the
engineering
consultants with the supervision of the construction of the Temengor
Hydroelectricity Project. After that I was transferred to the
Head Office in Kuala Lumpur and assigned to the Kenyir
hydroelectric
project. |

For the Kenyir Hydro Project, I was assigned to
administer the jungle clearing contract at the main dam. I was also
assigned with the implementation of the water supply scheme for the site staffs'
quarters. Since there was no water pipeline to the quarters at
that time, we had a contractor built a modest water supply
scheme to the quarters by taking clean and cool water from a nearby stream.
My boss then was Mr.Loh Chee Nam and the big bosses were
Mr.Fong Thin Yew followed by Mr.Th'ng Yong Huat. I deliberately
mentioned their names here because if I don't, I might forget
their names. Before both contracts could be completed, I was
promoted and transferred to Pasir Gudang in Johor to
assist with the supervision of the construction of the steam turbine power station there
under Mr.Jesuthasan. |

In 1997, I visited the Kenyir
Lake again, but as a tourist. We hired a boat caravan
belonging to my friend Dato' Wan Mohd Albakri for 3 days and 2 nights and enjoyed the scenery
of the lake and the fishing.
We slept and ate on the boat, parked by an island (formerly a
hill). It was great getting to know the Kenyir Lake that way. Now about 11 years later, on 21st June
2008, I was back visiting the Kenyir Lake, this time to
accompany my wife, Salmiah on a working assignment. We
stayed at the Lake Kenyir Resort & Spa. |

Even though the resort was a beautiful place with a
lovely scenery of the Kenyir Lake from the hotel as
well as from the chalet, where we stayed, we were not
impressed by the services provided by the hotel.
When we checked into the resort on the first day, we had to wait for more than an
hour before we were given our room keys. We didn't
mind the waiting, as we were used to it before, but
thought that the 5-star hotel
should have done a better public relation work
by providing waiting guests with free welcoming drink whilst they waited for the room
to be ready. Mind you, it's not a budget hotel and
Salmiah's employer paid 5-star rate for the room. Therefore,
the guests expected to be given 5-star
treatment too.
After we were settled with the room, the rest of the
day went well where we admired the scenic view of
the lake and the beautiful landscape during the day.
That night there was a thunderstorm with strong
winds. Therefore, we didn't get the chance to hear
the sounds of the crickets and other sounds made by
creatures of the night.
The next morning I woke up to look forward to the
buffet breakfast, where I expected to savour some of
the local Trengganu dishes. How disappointed my wife
and I were with the buffet
breakfast. There were no local Terengganu dish like
"nasi dagang" or "nasi minyak or at least "nasi lemak". The only local dish provided was
fried kuay teow and that did not reflect as being a Terengganu
dish. The rest of the dish were of course western
dishes. I guess, the hotel served more western
dishes and less local dishes to please the foreign
tourists, but little did they know that western tourists would like to try
the local dishes too. They have enough of western
dishes in their own countries and would like to try
something very different if they are out of their
countries. |

| Since our stay was too short, we didn't have
the chance to go travel on the lake. I heard there
were many
interesting places to visit. I hope to visit these
interesting places if I have the opportunity to visit the lake
for a longer period the next time. | |
